About this program

Lactation Exam Practice provides candidates of the IBLCE Examination with practice in multiple-choice assessment on a range of questions based on the topics examined in the IBLCE Examination.

An introductory section discusses studying techniques and how to handle exam nerves. A section on exam techniques will assist you when answering multiple-choice questions.

The practice exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions initially with more to follow prior to July. A significant number of questions are based on full-color photographs. The questions are divided into exams of 50 questions each for easy time management. All the questions have feedback, many with references to the evidence-based research - a great learning aid!

The question range has been created according to the blueprint of topics to be examined, as published by the IBLCE. All the questions are automatically graded - your results available immediately. You can see in which areas of the blueprint you may need more revision.

Lactation Exam Practice is open for enrollments from the 1st February each year until the IBLCE examination of that year.

Course Administration

A forum for discussion of everything relevant to exam candidates is facilitated by an experienced IBCLC. This forum is a highlight of the program each year.

Your access to the program, including the forums, will be from the time of your enrollment until the Friday after the IBLCE Exam.

When is the exam?

The IBLCE schedules the exam for the last Monday in July of each year. Please confirm this with IBLCE for the year you wish to sit it.

Accreditation

There are no credits being offered with this program.

The cost is US$75.00, and the enrollment period is from when you enroll until August 1st, 2010.

Why should I enroll in Lactation Exam Practice rather than buy a book of questions or take an exam-prep class?

That's easy! When you enroll in Lactation Exam Practice you'll get everything you can get from books and classes combined, plus much more for much longer. We really look after you!

  • Initially 200 questions similar to the IBLCE exam to practice on time and time again. In the last 6-weeks or so we'll release another set of questions for more practice.
  • Our questions are updated every year.
  • Every question has feedback - tips on that specific question such as how to avoid the pitfalls of red herrings, how to look at photographs critically, how to handle the 'most', 'least' and 'not' style of questioning, as well as some clinical information and where you can go to refresh your knowledge of the topic.
  • The forum: "The questions were great, the feedback incredibly useful, but the forums were what gave me the most confidence. It was fantastic - sharing knowledge, tips and support with other exam-takers from around the world, and Denise's knowledge and information was the best! What an incredible experience!. I made friends on the forum with other new IBCLCs that I'll keep for a lifetime. Thank you Health e-Learning!"
  • You'll have access to the exam questions, the forums and an experienced IBCLC educator for a full 6-months if you enroll on February 1. Regardless of when your enroll though you'll have all the facilities available to you until the week AFTER the IBLCE exam. Take your time - consolidate your learning and experience; it's not all over in one or two days.
  • You could start RIGHT NOW if you click HERE and enroll now.
  • And you get all this at any time of day or night that suits you, without having to leave home! Why would you even consider anything else?

Responses to: "What did you find of MOST benefit to you in doing Lactation Exam Practice?"

After extensive reading and self directed learning I found that the exam practice helped me to focus on how to read and answer multiple choice questions.

The exam broken into 50 questions and the discussion of many of the questions. The immediate feedback and ability to ask questions was helpful.

explanations with every answer; references to studies; identifying weak areas

I benefited most by training my mind to focus on exactly what is being asked - no matter what style the format of the question is.

The kind of questions that involved pictures/photos.

 Loved loved loved the forums!!
FABULOUS exchange of information, ideas, study techniques, ways to approach problems. PLUS wonderful group of supportive (mostly) women on this journey together all around  the world!! THANK YOU!

Able to keep retaking the quiz. The forum was most beneficial. Denise's feedback and links. Also participants references, links and study tips.

Using the same question format as the exam helped me to relax into the real exam situation very quickly. I did not feel nervous as I knew what to expect.

the instant feedback provided with each answer once a test was submitted. It helped provide insight into the topic instead of just a right/wrong confirmation.

identifying areas that my knowledge was lacking especially in the latest research areas. When I first wrote 10 years ago I had bought most of the texts which are somewhat outdated so found I was able to update my knowledge from the resources given to me from the practice answers.

Reading questions properly, negative stems, identifying the MOST correct answers, practise identifying photos, very helpful explanations to answers.

Oh my goodness, this is just like one of the exam questions. What is MOST beneficial when doing the exam practice?
    A. identifying weak areas to focus on
    B. finding out how much you don't really know
    C. practicing test taking strategies when you have no clue what the answer is.
    D. getting really stressed out.
Just like the exam, there are two really good answers, you decide! For me, A and C

Exams pointed out my weak areas or areas of study that I had not identified as important. really focused my studies and made me go back and read and re-read. I found the discussion boards extremely helpful as we rationalized why an answer was more correct than another. Denise was wonderful at guiding us, alleviating anxiety and focusing the studying. I feel this was more helpful than [another exam question prep] and that questions reflected more variety of subject matter and required comprehensive understanding of the topics and application of concepts.

It got me really focused in the months leading up to the exam. It was great to be part of the world wide passion and share with everyone in their quest for the Gold standard .

I thought the practices were great and covered so much. It helped to go over all of them the night before the exam.

The amount of time and knowledge Denise contributed to the forums was extremely helpful. The practice exams themselves really helped me focus on my weak areas and improve as needed.

I LOVED the explanations/reasonings underneath the correct answers. Those tips and quick reviews of techniques really made me understand the test taking principles and provided a fast way to remember facts and calculations. I liked the sense of humor in the comments as well!

practice of different styles of questions
Denise's comments after each question that weren't just the explanation, but some test taking skills included

The wonderful honest feedback remarks in addition to the correct information.

The photo questions I found to be the most helpful. The forum discussions were great too, especially as Denise helped us to find the answers to our questions, not by telling us, but by providing links to the appropriate research.

Becoming familiar with the type of question asked, especially negative stem.

It helped me to get used to reading questions. I tend to read too much into questions. I enjoyed the forums.

Practising the style of questioning and highlighting areas of knowledge deficit.

It highlighted areas that i needed to study.

It decreased my test anxiety, and gave me confidence in my knowledge base by causing me to study areas of weakness.

Negative stem questions. The forum was very beneficial as well, many people had the same concerns. It wasn't just about the exam, as I felt very positive about the impact on breastfeeding mothers, so many people keen to help and do it well. It gives an increasing sense of optimism about the future of breastfeeding.

The Exam practice assisted me greatly in answering the negative stem questions. Through the practice exams I also widened my knowledge base by referring to other sources for information.

Just the practice of going through the questions and being able to see the pictures and then the right answers along with the rationale was very helpful to me.

The fact that when I got answers wrong it was explained WHY they were wrong. It helped me to learn that information.

The rationale given after the questions was very helpful. I enjoyed the discussion forums also - it was great feeling that others were in the same boat!

Showing up my areas of weakness, where I had to do more study. Also very useful as practise, especially of the negative stem questions and the pictures.

After you checked your answers, there was a discussion of why it was right or wrong. That was so helpful.

General Comments

I wasted so much money at a cram review...This was what I really needed...I enjoyed the forum, Without your program I do not think I would have prepared enough..I will recommend it to all my Lactation peers...

I felt I was well prepared and felt my achievement should fairly match my results in the practice exam. The forum and the quick responses of Denise pointing us in the direction of reading or rereading the research was FANTASTIC!!!! THANKS again to the team - money very well spent.

I so appreciated the immediate feedback to the correct answer. And, more important, why the other answers were not correct or complete.
Also enjoyed your sensibility and humor, Denise, it helped relax me...not make this impending exam something I needed to continually avoid. I've been encouraged to take the exam for the last 5 years, but felt overwhelmed by the material to learn to prepare for the exam. Your courses & Lactation Exam helped me organize myself and absolutely made me keenly aware of areas I was weak at. Just wish I started earlier in actually going through the courses & practice exam. The worst scenario is if I didn't pass. then I'll be that much wiser in preparing for July 2010. I've already put good stuff to practice at a main Jerusalem Hospital where I've volunteer as a lactation educator for the last ten years. THANK YOU, Denise...and the staff!!! many hugs coming at you!

Having the forums to discuss questions and get further information was great. It was also great to find how others felt. All of this information helped me not only in my studying but in my day to day work helping moms.

Although it was sometimes frustrating, I appreciated that most of the time you didn't give us answers outright, but in such a way that we still had to think about it, and go back to our books.

I enjoyed reading the email discussions from different candidates around the world. The questions they put forward also helped my learning practice and reading Denise's response to questions was very helpful.

Whilst I didn't take part in any of the forums I found them very useful in discussing the questions. Thank you for the most useful study aid I could have used.

I found it very very helpful to consolidate my knowledge, and it quickly became evident to me where I needed to put more focus. I think it helped alot in the exam too, as I was so familiar with the type of questions being asked and that helped me to stay calm.

the forum is very helpful- we all need a friend when we are struggling.

Great to read all the discussions and see a whole new group of enthhusiastic IBCLCs in the making. Good luck to everyone!

What a great way to find out where weak areas of knowledge are.
