Sitting for the exam July 2010
Posted 29th Jul 09 By Erica Brown
I am an RN working full time in L & D/MB. I have worked 14 years with the last 7 being in OB/MB. I have taken 24 credits towards my Master's in Nursing but have yet to complete the program. I am the mother of three small children and have breastfed all my children including my one-year-old daughter currently. I am in the process of acquiring my CERP's to be able to sit for the exam. I have more than the required 2000 hours. I have been helping families BF for 8 years now. Any suggestions on which courses to start with on-line? This will be my first attempt at studying on-line with three young children and working full time.

Ahh Erica, sounds like you love a challenge! :-)
The full BreastEd program is highly recommended as providing excellent, up-to-date, research-based knowledge for your preparations. This program is also AARC-approved. To read more about AARC-approval you could visit the International Lactation Consultant Association website, but basically only courses that have the AARC approval have been reviewed by them and IBLCE and approved as covering the topics and subjects they will examine exam candidates on.
I'd say start with BreastEd course BE01, 02, 03 as they will give you the foundation on which to build your knowledge, then 04, 07 and 09 as they all go together nicely, then back to 06, 08, 05 and 10. But you can choose any order you like. I'd also recommend you do the Ethics course and finish off with Lactation Exam Practice.
Working full time and having a young family and studying means you probably won't be reading too many novels this coming year. Online studying though is the perfect way for you to go - you can study any time you have some time available, and still not miss out on that important contact with fellow students and close contact with a tutor. I'm sure you'll find it will suit your situation perfectly.
All the best
Denise

Hi,
I'm glad I'm not alone in preparing for the 2010 exam. I also have many clinical hours but am just starting the course work. This will be very interesting. I hope the technology doesn't drive me over the edge! Alex

I am in a similar situation as well. I work in the NICU full time and have a 6yr old and a 4yr old. Studying can be challenging at times but the courses are easy to follow and you have more than enough time to finish them within a month. My advice is to take one course at a time. Get the required 45hrs on the subjects which you need to learn about the most, then if time allows take some other courses in the program. There is always something new to learn.-kelli

I used the breast ed courses to help me prepare for the exam in 2008. I felt well prepared and did well on the exam. Good luck to all.
